Oakland’s revitalization

The change has been dramatic for this one block of Broadway in the Uptown District of Oakland. Outdated metal siding has been removed to reveal the row of buildings’ original facades, including one from famed architect, Julia Morgan. A second story is added and intentionally recessed to not detract from the restored first story facades. A pedestrian-oriented alley between buildings leads into a central courtyard, purposefully designed as the heart of the project for community gatherings and events. The project’s impact to the neighborhood has been tremendous. Abandoned for over 10 years, it is now buzzing with activity, day and night.
